United Way to celebrate women who transform their communities at annual Power of the Purse Luncheon

May 16, 2016

United Way of Summit County will host its annual Power of the Purse Luncheon on June 20, 2016 at Quaker Station in Akron. Now in its 14th year, the event celebrates the power of women to transform their communities and highlights the extraordinary efforts of female philanthropists throughout Summit County.

Ohio Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor will serve as keynote speaker for this year’s luncheon, which will include the presentation of the Barbara Mathews Woman Philanthropist of the Year Award. Since 2004, the award has recognized women who have demonstrated a passion for helping others through their service and financial support to causes within the local community.

The 2016 recipient of the award will be Jeannine Marks, director of development at Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center. A lifelong resident of the Akron area, Marks co-founded the Akron Marathon in 2003. Since then, the Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation has raised more than $1 million for charitable causes in partnership with local nonprofit organizations, including United Way.

United Way is committed to improving the lives of children and families throughout Summit County, with a focus on addressing the needs of the core City of Akron. Working hand in hand with volunteers, donors and local leadership, United Way recognizes the vital role women play in creating a community where every child and every family has a healthy, prosperous and fulfilling life.

Table sponsorships and tickets for the luncheon can be secured at uwsummit.org/events.
