Adapt to Thrive in Medina County with United Way of Summit & Medina

By Ron Paydo, The Huntington National Bank; and Jani Groza, Westfield

Nonprofits have always been the backbone of our communities, stepping in where traditional institutions fall short. But today, they face mounting challenges that hinder their ability to deliver real impact. This is more evident than ever in Medina County, where United Way of Summit & Medina (UWSM) is working tirelessly to adapt, evolve, and continue making a difference.

A few years ago, the Summit and Medina County United Ways merged to form UWSM, a move that maximized resources and strengthened our ability to serve local families. Since then, UWSM has committed to an ambitious goal: Financially empower 2,500 Medina County residents by 2028.

Why does this matter? Because 24% of Medina County households are part of the ALICE population—Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. They earn too much to qualify for federal aid but not enough to cover basic needs comfortably. An additional 7% of Medina households live in complete poverty. These families are working hard but still struggling to make ends meet. That’s where nonprofits like UWSM come in.

The numbers prove that UWSM’s work is making an impact. Through free financial counseling and tax preparation services, 165 Medina County residents are now on the path to financial empowerment. Families are opening bank accounts, increasing their savings, reducing debt, and improving their credit scores. These aren’t just statistics; they represent real lives changed.

But let’s not pretend that the road ahead will be easy. The nonprofit world is shifting, with funding uncertainties and changing donor habits making it harder to sustain vital programs. Many organizations, like UWSM, must rethink their strategies, streamline operations, and double down on what works. That means forming stronger community partnerships, embracing data-driven decision-making, and ensuring every dollar is stretched as far as possible.

As we have witnessed firsthand the impact of UWSM, we believe it’s time for all of us—individuals, businesses, and policymakers—to do what we can to support local nonprofits. Being among the largest employers in Medina and Summit counties, Huntington and Westfield believe that supporting nonprofits isn’t just about charity; it’s about strengthening the entire community. Whether through volunteering, donating, or advocating, we all have a role to play in ensuring that organizations like UWSM continue to serve those who need it most.

The message is clear: Nonprofits must adapt or risk falling behind. And as Medina County moves forward, we have a choice—support organizations like United Way of Summit & Medina or watch as our neighbors continue to struggle. We know which side we’re on. Do you?

In our community. With our community. For our community.
