Now recruiting vita volunteers for the 2022-2023 tax season

Every year, United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program brings in millions of dollars to the local community — dollars to help families jumpstart their savings, reduce debt and invest in their futures.

VITA depends on dedicated volunteers, who help local residents file their taxes and take advantage of programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). VITA is also an entry into other United Way services offered free through the Financial Empowerment Center, such as free one-on-one financial coaching.

IRS-certified training is free and volunteer shifts are available at different times and locations to fit your schedule. Want to make a difference in the lives of local residents? Become a VITA volunteer today!

  • Attend volunteer training
  • Pass an IRS Certification exam

VITA Volunteer Roles

GREETER

Greeters set a positive and friendly tone, welcoming all clients at the Financial Empowerment Center and our mobile VITA sites. They provide intake documentation, securely scan copies of documents for tax preparers, answer general client questions, and schedules future or follow-up tax appointments. Training requirement: Greeters will a attend a 1.5-hour virtual training session, which does not include tax law certification.

TAX PREPARER

IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers provide quality tax return assistance to clients. Volunteers are also trained to provide referrals to other United Way financial empowerment programs such as financial coaching and Bank On. Training requirement: Attend 1 full, 8 hour day of in-person training OR 2 4 hour virtual sessions of live online training to gain knowledge to pass an IRS tax law exam. Additional training materials, practice sessions and resources will be available.

QUALITY REVIEWER

All tax returns are examined for quality prior to review with clients. Quality reviewers apply their experience to ensure tax returns are completed correctly. They also assist clients in reviewing their completed returns. Training requirement: Attend 1 full, 8 hour day of in-person training OR 2 4 hour virtual sessions of live online training to gain knowledge to pass an IRS tax law exam. Additional training materials, practice sessions and resources will be available.

SITE COORDINATOR

Site Coordinators are volunteers with significant tax law knowledge or previous experience at a VITA site. They will review intake documents, ensure clients are matched with a preparer and answer taxpayer and volunteer questions. Additionally, site coordinators will be on hand to review completed tax returns. Training requirement: In addition to the training required for tax preparers, Site Coordinators must be a returning volunteer and attend 3-hour site coordinator training.

REGISTRATION
