Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program brought in more than $3M in refunds to residents last year.
United Way of Summit & Medina’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is seeking volunteers for the 2025 tax season. Last year, the program, which provides free income tax preparation services to Summit and Medina County residents, completed 2,453 returns. This year, United Way is looking to grow that number, with a goal of 2,700 completed returns, and as a result, will need more volunteers than ever.
Since it was launched in 2018, United Way’s VITA program has brought back $17.5 million in state and federal tax refunds to the local community. And with the average cost of commercial tax preparation exceeding $200, VITA clients get to keep the full amount of their refund. Last year, United Way’s VITA program saved clients an estimated $613,250.
“Volunteering with VITA since United Way of Summit & Medina began this program has been one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences I have had,” said Bill Lowery, Realtor at eXp Realty and a member of United Way’s board of directors. “My favorite part is the one-on-one interaction with clients, who always appreciate the free service. New volunteers should not be nervous to sign up for this season. Between the training, expert staff and committed lead volunteers, someone is always there to support you and answer questions.”
VITA volunteers receive free IRS-certified training, a choice of volunteer roles and flexible scheduling throughout tax season. No previous tax experience is necessary, and continuing education credits are available for some professionals. To learn more, or to register as a volunteer, visit uwsummitmedina.org/vita-volunteers.
“VITA is about more than helping people do their taxes,” said Jim Mullen, president and CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina. “The refunds families receive can go towards bills, buying groceries, paying down debt, or starting an emergency fund. And because we are offering this service through the Akron Financial Empowerment Center, we can connect people to free financial counselling and other services to put them on the path to lasting success. If you want to make a difference in your community, you should volunteer for VITA.”
